La Vista Cottage in Villadeati, Alessandria County
We were led to this old stone house by a local farmer whom we met by chance. We were immediately captivated by its
breathtaking views. The house had never been modernized-- retaining original terracotta floors, ceilings of vaulted brick
with enormous beams, and solid, heavy doors. The owner told us that it had been in his family for nearly 400years. In
2006, the old stone house became ours—and we have spent the last 3 years unobtrusively inserting modern
conveniences (heating and water tubes, new bathrooms, up-to-date electricity,). By reclaiming the spacious wine cantina,
we have added a comfortable, fully equipped kitchen that looks out to the views. The house, and its neighbors were built
on narrow terraces cut into the slopes beneath the old fortress castle. Behind the house, there is a panoramic garden
shaded by a centenarian Bagolaro tree and a small woods, still bordered by part of the medievel fortress wall.
Entering from a courtyard at the end of a private lane:
Ground floor: Dining room with fireplace, ½ bath, large kitchen (with woodstove), double bedroom with bathroom
(shower),
Upstairs: Salon with TV, woodstove, library, double bedroom with balcony and bath (w/ footed cast iron tub)
The house interior measures about 200m2
To compliment the rough stone walls, we have furnished the house in local, rustic antiques and bright, durable fabrics.
There is: clothes washer, TV (English Astra Satellite), library of local guides / maps and books in English, comfortable
bedding and linens, bathrobes, hairdryer, and umbrellas. The kitchen includes: fridge/freezer, gas burners, electric oven,
dishwasher, microwave, coffee makers, pots, pans, dishes/glasses, flatware, kitchen tools
Outdoors: Terrace with BBQ area, garden and woods
