The Vineyard Cottage stands at the highest point of this traditional Piemontese village. Located
halfway (15km) between the cultural and gastronomic centers of Asti and Alba, San Martino is on the
western border of the Monferrato, where it meets the Langhe and Roero regions. The village of 600
residents provides essential services: traditional trattoria, good pizzeria/restaurant, cafe, wine shop,
quality butcher, grocery, bank, post, church and hairdresser.
Most other needs can be met in the larger town (5km away) of San Damiano.
The 17thC. baroque castle at the center of San Martino is home to the prestigious Marchesi Alfieri
wine estate. The lands surrounding San Martino Alfieri are cultivated in grapes, as they have been
since the Middle Ages—producing some of Italy’s finest wines: Barbera, Nebbiolo--and also lesser
known local favorites like Bonarda, Grignolino,Cortese, and Arneis.
San Martino celebrates several festivals , but the annual Sagra della Barbera in August is the most
important; a long weekend of food, parties, games, dances--ending with a fireworks display best seen
from the cottage's balcony.
