Villa San Secondo This village, dedicated to the patron saint of Asti in the 14th C., has a fascinating history peeking out from behind its peaceful facade. The land where the Nido cottage stands was once the site of a peasant revolt against the castle’ s liege lord. Today it is home to 400 residents; most of them native Villese. The main piazza which hosts regular village festivals is a meeting point for all. Piemontese dialect, rather than pure Italian, is the’lingua franca’. There is an excellent market/butcher shop, a news agent, two restaurants, a yoga retreat, town hall, and four churches. Montechiaro, two kilometers away, provides most other services—restaurant, cafes, banks, dry cleaners, hairdressers and small shops.
